Nancy Mary Nell Newenhof

Nancy MaryNell Newenhof passed away Dec. 31, 2010 after her valiant struggle with cancer.
Nancy was born Feb. 12, 1932 in Sunnyside, Wash. to Clinton Fisk Price and Texanna Aileen Price. Nancy's father passed away just two months after she was born. Her mother passed away in 1984.
Nancy graduated from Sunnyside High School in 1950 and went to her 60th class reunion this past summer. She attended college at Central Washington in Ellensburg, Wash. before moving to Yakima.
Nancy was working at the Yakima Valley Library when the she met Gerald Elwood Newenhof. Nancy and Jerry were married on Feb. 21, 1954. They had two children, sons Gregory E. and Jeffrey E. Newenhof.
Nancy and Jerry lived throughout the Northwest as Jerry advanced in his career in the building materials industry. They moved to Astoria in 1975 when they purchased City Lumber Co., Inc. Nancy was active and involved in the business, overseeing the lighting and home decor departments, even more so after the passing of her beloved husband Jerry in 1991. Her sons Greg and Jeff will continue to run City Lumber.
Nancy was passionate about a lot of things — family, friends, reading, travel, her grandchildren and her dog Rudy.
During her lifetime, Nancy was active and involved in her community. She was involved in women's clubs in Yakima in the 1950's and 1960's; parent-teacher associations in the 1960's and 1970's; and after she moved to Astoria she participated in Rotary Anns, Zonta Club, volunteering at Columbia Memorial Hospital, Columbia River Maritime Museum and the SMART (Start Making A Reader Today) program, and supported dozens of causes.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Jerry, her brothers Arthur and Donald Price, and her lifelong friend and Jerry's cousin Jeanne Lavezzo.
She is survived by her son Greg; son Jeff and his wife K. Beth Newenhof; grandchildren Gerald W. Newenhof and Sadie O. Newenhof; sister Delta Price Bootsma and her husband Richard; sister-in-law Helen Price; nieces Sandra Price Dasenbrack and her husband Fred, DeAnn Bootsma Hochholter and her husband Ron, and Sandra Newenhof-Jones; nephews Donald Price and his wife Bonnie, Ronald Price and his wife Jan, Richard Bootsma Jr. and his wife Dina, and Ronald Newenhof and his wife Nancy; Stephanie Lavezzo Vitolano and her husband Steve; close friends Jim and Sue Wood of Astoria and numerous cousins, great-nieces and great-nephews.
At Nancy's request, there will be no local service. A graveside service will be at Terrace Heights Memorial Park in Yakima on Friday, Jan. 7 at 11 a.m.
Remembrances can be made to the Columbia River Maritime Museum, Clatsop County Historical Society or the Astor Library Friends Association, in care of Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, OR 97103.
