George LeRoy “Corkey”Adams was born July 20, 1938 in Bellevue, Ohio to Samuel LeRoy Adams and Sarah Elizabeth Geren. He died of cancer Wednesday, February 2, 2011 at his home. He lived in Bellevue, Ohio until 1949 when his family moved to Hammond, Oregon.
He quit school when he was in the 11th grade and joined the Army serving in the 570th Ord. in Fontent, France. After returning home, he met and married Jo Jenkins.
Corkey worked in construction for many years in Virginia. In Oregon, he worked for Warrenton Lumber and then was partners with David Gale in the Columbia Body Shop in Warrenton. Corkey and Jo owned and operated CORKEY’S convenience store and charter office in Hammond for over 25 years. They sold the business and retired in 2005.
Corkey enjoyed restoring old cars and fishing. He was known and loved for his unselfishness and generosity, always putting his family and friends first.
He is survived by his wife Jo, their daughter and son-in-law Kimberly and Will Claridge, grandsons Adam & wife Katrina, Derek J., Kyle, and Dustin; great-grandchildren Trinity & Riley.
In addition he is survived by two sisters, Wanda Ward of Dover, Tennessee and Norma Gillingham of Astoria, Oregon. Five brothers, David & Carol Adams of Boulder, Montana, John Adams of Pittsburg, California, Emery & Vera Adams and Sam & Laureen Adams of Bellevue, Ohio and Bob & Boots Shinabery of Hampton, Virginia. Also, brother-in-law Jerry & Stella Jenkins of Arkansas, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
His parents and the following sisters and brothers preceded him in death; Georgie Hollaway, Francis, Donald, Geraldine, Beatrice, Marion, Dale and Faye Adams; Leon, Andrew, Paul, Lillian, Opal, Pearl, Willard, Bernard, and Donald Shinabery.
Visitation will be held Friday, 3-6pm at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 3rd and Niagara, Astoria, Oregon. Funeral arrangements will be under the direction of Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, Oregon 97103. Burial will be at the Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard, Portland, Oregon on Monday, February 14, 2011 at 1:00pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Missionary Fund of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
