Hazel Mary Herlin, age 85, of Astoria, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2011, in Astoria. She was born May 19, 1925, in North Bend, to Emil Edward Mattila and Mary Kalliomaa, Finnish immigrants. When she was 3 months old, the family moved to Butte, Mont., where she was raised. She learned to speak English in the first grade, and graduated from high school June 6, 1944, D-Day. In 1945, she moved to Astoria. On March 6, 1947, she married Donald H. Herlin in Astoria. He preceded her in death July 31, 1969. Mrs. Herlin was a homemaker. She also worked in various local canneries and for the Red Lion laundry, retiring in 1988. She was a member of the Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, Donald Edward Herlin of Astoria; a daughter and son-in-law, Nancy Jean and Bruce David Bouvia of Rosburg, Wash.; two granddaughters, Jessica Marie Bouvia of Seaside and Angela Lynn Bouvia of Knappa; and three great-grandchildren, Wynter Forsgren and Blaine C. Ogier of Seaside and Axel Dane Barendse of Knappa. Mrs. Herlin requested that there be no service. A family gathering will be held at a later date.
