Jessica Shackelton Maclay

May 12, 1980 — February 20, 2011

Jessica Shackelton Maclay, 30, of Warrenton, died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2011, from injuries sustained in a car accident near Seaside.

She was born May 12, 1980, in Warsaw, N.Y. Her mother and stepfather, Judy (Eltz) and Gene Bleecker of Canastota, N.Y., survive. Her father and stepmother, Ralph and Lola Shackelton of Lakeland, Fla., also survive.

Educated in New York schools, she received a master’s degree in social work from the University at Buffalo, with a concentration in community development.

On July 13, 2008, she married Thomas “TJ” Maclay III. He survives, residing in Warrenton.

Mrs. Maclay worked for Clatsop Community Action as a case manager for homeless services, her dream job of bringing the community closer together.

Family members said she loved her work and jumped on every opportunity to better her community. She spent little energy on herself, from supporting her husband’s endeavors to monitoring Freecycle for clients’ needs. She was relentless in caring for and helping others. She enjoyed scrapbooking, making jewelry, hiking, kayaking and spending time with family and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she is survived by a daughter, Kaiya Lynn Maclay of Warrenton; a maternal grandmother, Elsie Eltz of Sherrill, N.Y.; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Christy and Jeff Lamberton of Rochester, N.Y., and Tami and Ron Menard of Norwich, N.Y.; two brothers, Kevin Shackelton of Norwich and Brian Shackelton of Sherrill; a mother-in-law and father-in-law, Marie and Tim Maclay of Plainfield, Vt.; a sister-in-law, Heather Maclay of Plainfield; a brother-in-law, Jeffrey Maclay of Plainfield; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Shackelton.

A celebration of life will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. today at Columbia Memorial Hospital Urgent Care Health and Wellness Pavilion, 2265 Exchange St.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made at any U.S. Bank to the In Memory of Jessica Maclay account, a trust fund for her daughter.
