Betty May Johnson

Betty May Johnson, 74, of Knappa, died Friday, July 15, 2011, in Portland.

She was born Oct. 6, 1936, in Portland, to Edward Donald and Frances Gertrude (Huffman) Schuyler.

In 1955, she graduated from Knappa High School.

On Jan. 30, 1954, she married Gordon “Corkey” Johnson in Westport. He survives, residing in Knappa.

Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker.

Family members said she enjoyed gardening, reading, genealogy, traveling, history, sewing, cooking and spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Vienna Garcia of Hammond and Laura and Roger Maki of Knappa; two sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Jeri Johnson of Astoria and David and Brenda Johnson of Newberg; seven grandchildren, Tim and Tera Jackson and Kevin and Steven Maki, all of Knappa, Brandon Garcia of Hammond and Ryan and Travis Johnson Newberg; a brother, Jim Longer of Kelso, Wash.; a sister, Patsy Ball of Knappa; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Amie Johnson; two brothers, Raymond and John Schuyler; and a sister, Helen Kochen.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 21, at Knappa Prairie Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Svensen Community Church, 40618 Old Highway 30.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Knappa Schools Foundation, 41535 Old Highway 30, Astoria, OR 97103; Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Mail Code: BTE355, 3181 S.W. Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239; or Lower Columbia Hospice, 486 12th St., Astoria, OR 97103.

Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria is in charge of the arrangements.
