Curtis Harry "Bud" McKinney, 89, of Portland, formerly of Astoria, died Saturday, July 30, 2011, in Milwaukie.
He was born Feb. 9, 1922, in Excelsior Springs, Mo., to Curtis Shackleford and Gladys Belle (Munsell) McKinney.

He attended high school in Excelsior Springs, and graduated from the University of Missouri Dental School in 1951.
From 1942 to 1946, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
On Aug. 12, 1950, he married Jean (Bailey) McKinney in Excelsior Springs. She survives, residing in Portland.
Dr. McKinney practiced dentistry in his home town until 1972, when he accepted the position of director of the dental clinic at the Tongue Point Job Corps in Astoria, operated by the University of Oregon. He retired in 1986, and made 11 trips to third world countries with Mercy Ships.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria and the Astoria Rotary Club.
Family members said he held a private pilot's license and always said he'd "rather be flying."
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Curt McKinney of Eugene; two daughters, Dana M. St. John of Madras and Margaret M. Eby of Olympia, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Jesse, Nathan and Aaron St. John of Madras.
At the family's request, there will be no formal service at this time.
