Marion Catherine Lind

Marion Catherine Lind, 94, of Seaside, died Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011, in Seaside.

She was born June 10, 1917, in Detroit, Mich., to Henry W. and Margaret (Weiden) Goddeeris.

She was raised in Michigan. At a young age, her father died and she went to work for the Champion Spark Plug Co.

She enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard and served from April 27, 1944, to Jan. 18, 1946, and was stationed at Tongue Point in Astoria.

In 1945, she married Virgil W. Ward in Astoria. They later divorced.

In 1982, she married Lt. Col. Arthur M. Lind in Bremerton, Wash. He preceded her in death in 2004.

Mrs. Lind worked at Greenbergs Furniture Store in Astoria, then at J.C. Penney Co. She also worked at the Astoria Clinic in the clerical department until her retirement in 1982. She lived with her daughter in Port Orchard, Wash., until 2010. She moved to Seaside, and has resided there since.

Family members said her hobbies included bowling, crocheting and listening to music.

She is survived by five daughters and four sons-in-law, Marilynne and Gary Belden of Vancouver, Wash., Judie Malinen of Warrenton, Sue and Jay Browning and Esther and Dennis Umphfres, all of Astoria, and Kathy and Dennis Peterson of Port Orchard; 13 grandchildren, Tricia Belden and Jennifer Sherman of Vancouver, Tony and Andrew Malinen of Warrenton, Juli Hol, Renee Tarabochia and her husband, Ryan, Elizabeth Nelson and Michael Umphfres, all of Astoria, Jessie Browning and his wife, Dette, and Jared Browning, all of Knappa, Angela McCleary and her husband, Monty, of Seaside, and Nick Peterson and his wife, Stephenie, and Mathew Peterson, all of Texas; 16 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews in Michigan.

She was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Michael Malinen; a grandson, Bradley Belden; a great-granddaughter, Ashlynn Dawn Anderson; a brother, John Goddeeris; and two sisters, Dorothy Richards and Margaret Croke.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, and from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 4, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., followed by funeral at the mortuary at 3 p.m. Sunday.
