Janet Alyce Rasmus Stomp, 78, of Ocean Park, Wash., died Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, in Portland.
She was born Dec. 1, 1932, in Astoria, to Runar E. and Alyce (Polkey) Rasmus.
Raised in Astoria, she graduated from Astoria High School in 1950.
On June 24, 1951, she married Clarence “Larry” Stomp in Astoria. Pastor Stomp survives, residing in Ocean Park. The couple recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.
In their early years of marriage, Mrs. Stomp was a homemaker. She helped put her husband through college and seminary, and worked in an attorney’s office. From 1964 to 1966, the family lived in Niobe, N.D., then in 1966, moved to Bismark, N.D. She attended the University of Mary in Bismark, and graduated in 1969 with a bachelor’s degree in education, music and social science. She then attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, and received a master’s degree in education in 1972. She held a lifetime teaching certificate from North Dakota.
In 1975, she returned to Oregon and taught in elementary schools and at Astoria High School, and was the first teacher to teach alternative education. In 1977, the family moved to Caldwell, Idaho, where she taught elementary education and at Head Start. In 1982, she pursued a doctorate degree in education at Oregon State University. In 1984, she moved to Longview, Wash., where she was an educational coordinator for Head Start and taught adult education at Lower Columbia College. She moved to Ocean Park in 1993, and retired from teaching. She then became an Avon representative for nine years.
She served on the educational ministry team for Synod – ECLA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America). She was president of Alpha Omega, Delta Kappa Gamma Chapter, a member and choir director of Peace Lutheran Church, and a member of University Women and the Peninsula Arts Association. She also volunteered at the Ocean Park Food Bank.
Family members said her hobbies included painting with watercolors, reading and traveling. She loved her Newfoundland dogs.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Greg and Kathy Stomp of Cooperstown, N.D., and Brad and Debbie Stomp of Beaverton; a daughter and son-in-law, Jana and Dan Price of Star, Idaho; and adopted daughter, Karen Marsh of Nampa; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Alfred and Anne Rasmus of Keizer and Carl and Alice Stomp of Indiana; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and six special cousins.
She was preceded in death by a grandson, Troy Price.
A memorial will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Peace Lutheran Church.
Private burial was at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
