Violet Elizabeth Knapp

Violet Elizabeth Knapp, age 88, of Knappa, died Friday, Oct. 14, 2011, in Knappa. She was born May 20, 1923, in Troutdale, to Michael and Rosa F. (Burg) Steudler. She was raised in Deer Island and Ridgefield, Wash. In her early years, she worked in the strawberry fields and bulb farms. In 1950, she married Marion Oliver Knapp in Vancouver, Wash. He preceded her in death in 1980. The couple moved to Knappa in 1950. Mrs. Knapp was a homemaker, and enjoyed raising her family. Family members said her hobbies included flower gardening, painting and arts and crafts. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Dan and Judy Knapp and Chuck and Vi Knapp, all of Knappa; a daughter, Rosemary Barber and her companion, Ron Giffert, of Newberg; nine grandchildren, Barbara Lane and her husband, Doug, of Woodburn, Douglas Knapp of Sherwood, Josh Knapp and his wife, Christina, Jessica Stuhr and her husband, Frank, and Tanya Jones, all of Knappa, Teresa White of Eugene, Jennifer Mack and her husband, Greg, of North Plains, and Timothy Barber and Tom Barber and his wife, Chandel, all of Newberg; and a sister, Mary Nickelson of Battleground, Wash. She was preceded in death by her companion of more than 25 years, Jimmy Morrell; and two sisters, Margaret Jasmer and Anna Rose Hartley. Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 21, at Knappa Assembly of God Church, followed by a reception at the church, then a graveside service at 2 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria. Memorial contributions may be given to the Knappa Assembly of God Church, 41767 Old Highway 30, Astoria, OR 97103. Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria is in charge of the arrangements.
