Robert Paul "Bob" Maley

Robert Paul "Bob" Maley, age 87, of Astoria, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2012, in Astoria. He was born Oct. 14, 1924, in Salineville, Ohio, to Peter A. and Minnie B. (Borger) Maley. He was raised in Salineville. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served from June 1941 to May 1960. He received several awards, including the Good Conduct (fouth award), Victory, China Service, Navy Occupation with Asia Clasp, Korean Service (one star), U.S., and the National Defense Service medals. On Feb. 1, 1947, he married Vivienne Conway in Steubenville, Ohio. She survives, residing in Astoria. After his career with the Navy, Mr. Maley worked for the Oregon State Game Commission, first at Diamond Lake, then for 22 years at the Gnat Creek Fish Hatchery. He retired in 1983. He was a member of St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, the Fleet Reserve Association, Clatsop Post 12 American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Family members said his hobbies included fishing and hunting. In October, he attended the "Honor Flights of Eastern Oregon," a tour of memorial sites in Washington, D.C. This was a dedication to veterans who served during World War II, the Korean and the Vietnam wars. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Joyce Maley of Astoria; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Katherine and Michael Keyser and Mary and Mike Warren, all of Astoria, and Michele Maley-Paris of Redmond; 10 grandchildren, Mike Keyser and his wife, Erika, Jennifer Morgan and her husband, Mitch, Jon Keyser, Brice Maley and Sean and Michala Warren, all of Astoria, Isaac Paris of Fairbanks, Alaska, Andrew Paris of Portland, Ashley Paris of Vannes, France, and Zachary Maley of Anchorage, Alaska; and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Maley requested that there be no funeral. Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one's choice. Caldwell's Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria is in charge of the arrangements.
