Shelley A. Swanberg

Shelley A. Swanberg, 70, of Astoria, died Monday, Feb. 20, 2012, in Astoria.

She was born Aug. 3, 1941, in Portland, to Alfred Leonard Robinson and Charlotte Ann Beatty. When she was 6 years old, her mother preceded her in death. Her father remarried.

Raised in Portland, she attended Portland schools.

On Aug. 25, 1962, she married William “Bill” Swanberg in Portland. They later divorced. He preceded her in death.

In 1959, Mrs. Swanberg went to work for the phone company as a switchboard operator. She and her husband settled in Portland before coming to Astoria Aug. 1, 1966. She was a homemaker, and enjoyed raising her family. She attended Clatsop Community College and earned a bachelor’s degree. She worked at Columbia Memorial Hospital in various capacities, retiring in the mid-2000s.

Her family remembers her raising chickens and selling the eggs to earn enough money to buy a car. Her hobbies included scrapbooking and photography. She loved her dogs, and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kelly and Eddie Beers of Warrenton and Julie and Jay Englund of Astoria; a son and daughter-in-law, David and Tamela Swanberg of Ellensberg, Wash.; seven grandchildren, Lisa Alfonse, Nicholas Tagg and David Swanberg II, all of Warrenton, Winnie Swanberg of Seaside and Nadine and Clay Englund and Sonya Vanraden Leon, all of Astoria; three great-grandchildren, Xander Baum and Ceinna Alfonse of Warrenton and Lillie Swanberg of Seaside; a good friend, Virginia “Ginny” Shepherd of Astoria; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Bruce Robinson.

There will be visitation from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., then a funeral at 1 p.m. at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1465 Grand Ave.

A graveside service after the funeral at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton will be followed by a reception at the St. Mary, Star of the Sea School Auditorium.
