Bill Joe Ashbaugh

Bill Joe Ashbaugh, age 48, of Hammond, died Monday, March 26, 2012, in Portland. He was born Feb. 4, 1964, in Portland, to Clarence W. and Virginia L. (Moore) Ashbaugh. His parents survive, residing in Astoria. Raised in Clatsop County, he attended Astoria High School. On May 31, 1997, he married Deanne Calfee in Astoria. They divorced in 2011. She survives, residing in Arlington, Texas. For the last 15 years, Mr. Ashbaugh worked at the Georgia Pacific Wauna Mill in the converting and steam plant departments. Prior to that, he worked at various jobs in the restaurant, fishing and maintenance businesses. He was a member of Gateway Community Church in Hammond. He previously attended Grace Episcopal Church in Astoria. Family members said his hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, all-terrain vehicle riding, playing acoustic and electric guitar, video games and working on and repairing cars, ATVs and other vehicles. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Colton Ashbaugh of Hammond; a stepdaughter, Kim Calfee of Hammond; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Tom Castro of Astoria and Kandy and Kai Reiss of Garden Grove, Calif.; a niece, Sara Kelly and her companion, Joseph Lugo, of Portland; a nephew Tony Kelly and his companion, Ana Zolatas, of Astoria; a great-niece, Layla Kelly of Portland; a great-nephew, Hunter Kelly of Astoria; two stepnephews, Jerry Castro and his wife, Meredith, of Kelso, Wash., and David Castro and his wife, Stephanie, of Mira Loma, Calif.; and a great-stepniece and great-stepnephew, Malynne and J.D. Castro of Kelso. A memorial will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at the Gateway Community Church, 796 Pacific Drive in Hammond. Memorial contributions may be made to the Colton R. Ashbaugh Education Fund, in care of Wauna Federal Credit Union, 3250 Lief Erikson Drive, Astoria, OR 97103. Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary in Astoria is in charge of the arrangements.
