Dean Leroy Safley, 71, of Astoria, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, in Astoria.
He was born April 13, 1940, in Cottage Grove, to Delbert F. and Corinne N. (Olson) Safley.
Raised in Astoria, the family moved to McMinnville when he was a junior in high school. In 1959, he graduated from McMinnville High School, where he was active in track and field. He enrolled at Linfield College.
He served in the National Guard, and was on active duty in 1960 at Fort Ord, Calif.
He returned to Linfield College, where he was a member of the Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity, and graduated in 1965.
Mr. Safley worked for Standard Oil Company for a year in Eugene, followed by many years in the insurance business. He then worked in real estate property management for the remainder of his career.
Family members said his hobbies included golfing, photography, traveling and visiting with his many friends.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Misty Elizabeth Safley-Griffey and Allen Griffey of Stafford, Va.; two grandchildren, Joshua Jeffrey and Hillary Elizabeth Stansfield of Stafford; a brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Lorine Safley of Mesquite, Nev.; two cousins, Mike Safley of Hillsboro and Mike Bertsch of Black Diamond, Wash.; two nephews, Troy Safley of Fontana, Calif., and Timothy Safley of Beaumont, Calif.; and a niece, Tamera Valencia of Ontario, Calif.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 5, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave.
A committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 6, at City View Funeral Home, 390 Hoyt St. S. in Salem. Private interment will follow at Mount Crest Abbey Mausoleum in Salem.
Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one’s choice.
