Virginia Ann Swart "Ginny" Zafiratos

Virginia Ann Swart “Ginny” Zafiratos, 81, of Astoria and Palm Desert, Calif., died Saturday, May 5, 2012, in Astoria.

She was born Sept. 20, 1930, in Astoria, to Walter Raleigh and Alice Millicent (Slade) Swart.

After graduating from Astoria High School, she attended the University of Oregon, where she was a member of the Gamma Phi Sorority. She moved to Pendleton.

She married Nicholas “Nick” Zafiratos in Portland. He survives, residing in Astoria. In 1959, the couple moved to Astoria. They were married 55 years.

Mrs. Zafiratos worked at her husband’s law office while raising her children.

Family members said she enjoyed traveling, gardening, golfing, “cleaning up” at bingo and doing crossword puzzles. She was an avid reader as well as a creative cook. She valued her lifelong friends, with whom she stayed in contact until the very end of her life.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three daughters and two sons-in-law, Ann Zafiratos of Santa Barbara, Calif., Molly and Kevin Koehnke of Riverview, Fla., and Jane Zafiratos and Drew Augustin of Warrenton.

A funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, May 11, at Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 Franklin Ave.

Private vault interment will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718 or the American Heart Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas, TX 75231.
