Evelyn Frances “Nibs” McCabe, 95, of Astoria, died Thursday, June 14, 2012, in Astoria.
She was born Aug. 15, 1916, in Hollywood, Calif., to William Ernest and Ella May (Mondon) Haney.
She graduated from University High School and attended Santa Monica Junior College, majoring in art.
On June 25, 1937, she married Royal N. McCabe. He preceded her in death. The couple lived and raised their daughters in Sherman Oaks, Calif.
Mrs. McCabe went back to college and earned a teaching certificate when her daughters were finishing high school. She then had a full teaching career, retiring in 1984. In 2004, she suffered a small stroke, which she fully recovered from. Feeling she should no longer live on her own, she joined her daughter in Astoria, where she lived out her life.
She was a Girl Scout leader of two troops and active in scouting for more than 20 years. She then became active in the Sherman Oaks Women’s Club, where she served several terms as president, and the rest of the time as art chairwoman.
Family members said she enjoyed arts and crafts, jewelry making and costume design, and was a fine artist. She loved her dogs Dixie, Ginger and Miss Muffet, her plants and her cat, Glory.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathleen and Peter Fielding of Laguna Beach, Calif., and Mollie and Steve Berk of Astoria; seven grandchildren, Evelyn Lopez and her husband, Joe, of Tacoma, Wash., David Fielding of Anaheim, Calif., Roy Fielding and his wife, Cheryl, of Tustin, Calif., Roderick Fielding and his wife, Nancy, of San Diego, Arek Pfeffer of Oceanside, Calif., Elise Miller and her husband, John, of Appleton, Wis., and Adam Berk and his wife, Dejah, of Astoria; and nine great-grandchildren, Gwen Pfeffer of Fullerton, Calif., Lisa Pfeffer of Oceanside, Jake, Nicholas, Lucas, Jillian and Andrew Miller of Appleton, Wis., Liam Fielding of Tustin and Peter Fielding of San Diego.
A funeral will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, June 23, at the Old North Church, Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive in Los Angeles. Interment will follow.
