Zaradine Cheney

Zaradine Cheney, 73, of Hammond, died Saturday, July 7, 2012, in Portland.

She was born Aug. 12, 1938, in Pocatello, Idaho, to Frederick John and Maxine (Hammond) Slagowski.

She started to read at age 3, and graduated from Idaho Falls High School in 1955. She attended St. Mary’s Nursing Academy at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and received her degree at the age of 19.

On March 30, 1961, she married Lyle Cheney in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He survives, residing in Hammond.

Mrs. Cheney worked for a few years at the hospital in Idaho Falls and at Yellowstone National Park. The family moved to Oregon in 1965, and she worked at Salem Memorial Hospital. In 1977, they moved to Clatsop County, and she continued her nursing career at Columbia Memorial Hospital and Clatsop Care Center, retiring in 2000.

Family members said she enjoyed raising her family, scouting, music and reading.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by seven sons and six daughters-in-law, Jon and Taunia Cheney of Wasilla, Alaska, Jeffery and Gienah Cheney of Vernonia, Lance and Amber Cheney of Fairbanks, Alaska, Craig and Pam Cheney of Aloha, Mark and Holly Cheney of Olympia, Wash., Brent Cheney of Beaverton and Jared and Patti Cheney of Gresham; a daughter and son-in-law, J’lene and John Ludtke of Moses Lake, Wash.; 29 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday, July 14, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 350 Niagara Ave. in Astoria, with a funeral following at 2 p.m.

Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, July 16, at the Archer-Sutton Cemetery in Archer, Idaho.
