Dorothy Ivern Thompson

Dorothy “Ivern” Thompson, 91, of Astoria, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Astoria.

She was born, Jan. 1, 1921, in Astoria, to Ernest and Hattie (Croisant) Gutzeit.

Raised in Astoria, she graduated from Astoria High School in 1939.

On March 15, 1942, she married Peter N. Thompson in Astoria. He preceded her in death Sept. 16, 1992.

During World War II, Mrs. Thompson worked for the Selective Service and Civil Service Agencies. After the war, she returned to Astoria and worked for the Thompson Seafood Company until 1969. Then she was employed by First Federal Saving and Loan in Astoria, which became Far West Federal Saving and Loan. She retired in 1983 as branch manager.

After retiring, she volunteered at the Clatsop County Food Bank, and various other charities.

Family members said her hobbies included oil painting, playing the piano and organ, gardening and traveling. She loved spending time with her family and special times with her grandchildren.

She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. She served as elder, deacon and on various church committees. She was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority for more than 50 years.

She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and Richard Elder of Astoria; three grandchildren, Peter Elder and his wife, Brandi, of Vancouver, Wash., Scott Elder of Eugene and Sarah Elder of Astoria; a great-grandson, Zachary Elder of Vancouver; and two nephews and their spouses, Ray and Gail Gutzeit of Ocean Springs, Miss., and Clary and Patti Gutzeit of Mountain View, Hawaii.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Claremont Gutzeit.

A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 6, at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. A reception will follow at the church.

A private graveside service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.

Memorial contributions may be given to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 1103 Grand Ave., Astoria, OR 97103 or the American Cancer Society, 250 William St., N.W. Atlanta, GA 30303-1002.
