Ray Elgin Cables

Ray Elgin Cables, age 80, of Astoria, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2012 in Astoria.

He was born Sept. 10, 1931, in Portland, to Percy W. Cables and Frances G. Holt Cables.

He grew up in Portland and graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1949. He attended Oregon State University, majoring in business. From 1951 to 1954, he served in the U.S. Navy. In 1957, he married Arlene Sybil Patten. She preceded him in death in 1998.

He married Beverly Hockman. She preceded him in death in 2008.

For more than 20 years, Mr. Cables was the camping department manager for Wigwam Outdoor Stores. He then started the Western Outdoor Wholesale Distributing Co. and owned and operated this company until his retirement in 1997. His hobbies included snow skiing, waterskiing, clam digging and deep sea fishing.

He is survived by one son, Brian L. Cables of Ilwaco, Wash.; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patti R. and Thomas Medicinehorse of Crow Agency, Mont., Pamela M. and Steven Ackley and Sally Jo and Jack Harms, all of Warrenton; four grandchildren, Kylee and Taeler Cables of Camas, Wash., Andrew Arnott of Portland and Cody Arnott of Scappoose; and one great-grandson, Joseph Arnott of Portland.

Mr. Cables requested no funeral service. His cremated remains will be scattered at sea.
