Phyllis Marie Hicks, 83, of Astoria, died Monday, Aug. 20, 2012 in Portland.
She was born Sept. 6, 1928, in Astoria, to Fredrick A. Bowers Sr., and Helen C. Nelson Bowers.
She graduated from Astoria High School in 1946, and attended Clatsop Community College and the Portland Museum of Art School.
She married Charles E. Hicks, June 9, 1951. They later divorced. Mr. Hicks died in 2000.
Mrs. Hicks worked at Gunderson’s Variety Store and Kiddies Korner in Astoria. In 1965, she started working as a cook with the Astoria School District, becoming cafeteria manager and retiring in 1990. She taught Sunday school for a few years at the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria. Her hobbies included reading, crossword puzzles and watching her special TV shows.
She was Girl Scout leader for Brownies, Cadets and Senior troups. She was co-chairwoman for the Girl Scout Roundup, and served as president of the Daughters of Norway for several years.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Cheryl Ewan and Cindy and Michael Wear, all of Astoria; a son, Randy Hicks of Astoria; five grandchildren, Rebecca Wear, Trask Hicks and D’Nette Hicks and her companion, Shawn Virgillo, all of of Astoria, David Hicks and his companion, Debra Safranek, of Merlin, Jon Hicks and his wife, Carrie, of Beaverton; one brother, Frank Bowers of Portland; and seven great-grandchildren
She was preceded in death by a brother, Frederick Bowers Jr.
A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2012 at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria.
A private graveside service will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.
