Anna T. Herman

Anna T. Herman, 102, of Astoria, formerly of North Jackson, Ohio, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2012, in Astoria, after a two-day illness.

She was born Dec. 30, 1909, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Fred W. and Mary (Pfaus) Hoffman.

In 1927, she graduated from Ursuline Academy, and was the oldest living alumna. She was a member of the initial class of Youngstown College.

On Sept. 9, 1939, she married Francis J. “Hank” Herman. He preceded her in death. The couple met at Youngstown College and graduated together from Ohio University in 1931. After marrying, they moved to Pittsburgh, Pa.

Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Herman was a social worker, and then worked for the telephone company. After World War II, she and her husband moved to North Jackson, where she resided until she was 101.

She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in North Jackson.

Family members said her lifelong interests were her children, grandchildren, travel, bridge and daily crossword puzzles. She was also an avid reader and vintage movie buff.

She is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary and Edward Emmett of Philadelphia, Ellen Herman and Paul Dinkel of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Frances and Robert Lord of Portsmouth, N.H.; a son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Jean Herman of Astoria; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two grandchildren; and two brothers, Leonard and Arthur Hoffman.

Beginning at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, there will be a rosary and funeral Mass at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1465 Grand Ave.
