James Allen “Jim” Pember, 66, of Astoria, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, in Astoria.
He was born Aug. 30, 1946, in Coos Bay to Marshall Oliver and Nellie Winnifred (Delong) Pember.
Raised in Coos Bay, he graduated from Marshfield High School there in 1964. He attended Chemeketa Community College in Salem.
He enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served two terms in Vietnam.
He married, and later divorced. The couple had three children.
On Aug. 16, 1986, he married Janice Rummell in Joseph. She survives, residing in Astoria.
Mr. Pember worked for a while at the Tongue Point Job Corps Center in the maintenance department. He then worked for the Oregon Department of Transportation for 16 years, and for May Trucking Company at Wauna Mill for seven years. He took an early retirement because of health issues.
Family members said his hobbies included fishing, hunting, camping, painting, cooking and photography. He was an excellent gardener, and had a passion for living adventurously in the Pacific Northwest. He loved spending time with his family and friends.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Angela and Glenn Taggart of Astoria; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Mike and Angela Pember of Warrenton and Jerry Pember of Astoria; eight grandchildren, Miles and Cutter Pember of Portland, Codey Pember and Emma and Daisy Taggart, all of Astoria, Aleena Pember of Beaverton and Joss and Jada Pember of Clatskanie; two sisters, Jean Manfull of Eugene and Juanita Fox of Albany; four brothers in spirit, Bruce, Brian and Bart Rummell of Astoria and Kelvin Rummell of Seaside; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John Pember.
A celebration of life and memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at the North Coast Family Fellowship Church, 2245 N. Wahanna Road Road in Seaside, with a reception following.
