Gary Lee Fields, 78, of Astoria, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, peacefully, at home.
He was born May 17, 1934, in Portland, to Byrne Fields and Gudrun (Rausand) Fields Martin. His parents; stepfather, Lloyd Martin; and grandmother, Annie Gjovik, preceded him in death.
When he was 4 years old, he moved with his family from Portland to Astoria, where he attended schools.
In 1951, he married Ellen Bechtolt. The couple had five children and later divorced.
On June 10, 1995, he married Joyce C. Andrews. She survives, residing in Astoria.
Mr. Fields enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served for 20 years. He then worked for 16 years in civil service in Anchorage, Alaska, as a warehouse vehicle operator. He came to the North Coast in June 1988.
He was a member of Clatsop Post 12 American Legion.
Family members said his hobbies included fishing, hunting and motor home traveling.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael Fields of Downey, Calif., and Robert Fields of Roy, Utah; two daughters, Vicki Classen of Gresham and Debbie Walker of Logan, Utah; a stepdaughter, Cindy K. Mickle, and her husband, Mick, of Astoria; two stepsons and their spouses, Bob and Marsha Andrews of Brush Prairie, Wash., and Garin and Mary Jo Andrews of Spokane, Wash.; a brother and sister-in-law, Larry and Shirley Martin of Astoria; two nephews, Larry Martin Jr. and his wife, Shaney, of Beaverton and Eric Martin and his wife, Cari, of Portland; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren; and several special cousins.
He was preceded in death by a son, James Fields.
A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 1, at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
