Peter Robert Kelleher, 70, of Astoria, died Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, in Astoria.
He was born Aug. 16, 1942, in Bar Harbor, Maine, to Bernard J. and Rosemary (Young) Kelleher.
Raised in Chatham, N.Y., he graduated from high school there.
On Nov. 5, 1994, he married Carol Scurry. She survives, residing in Astoria.
In 1959, Mr. Kelleher enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard. He served for more than 21 years, retiring as a chief warrant officer 4. He then worked with the Merchant Marine as a chief engineer on tankers up and down the Atlantic Coast from Connecticut to Texas, retiring in 2001. After retiring, he worked part time on different projects within the maritime industry.
He was a member of the Clatsop Post 12 American Legion.
Family members recalled how impeccable his work ethic was. His hobbies included motorcycles, travel and gillnet fishing. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Debbie Kelleher of Layton, Utah; a daughter and son-in-law, Midori and Rick Larson of Astoria; a stepdaughter, Dawn Fowler and her partner, Christian Nethercott, of Vancouver, Wash.; five grandchildren, Devin Kelleher of Layton, Sabastian Kelleher of West Linn, Abbie Larson of Astoria and Reece and Cole Nethercott of Vancouver; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Susan and Skip Ruggles of Raleigh, N.C., Laurie and John Vairetta of Franklin, Tenn., and Lynn and Steve Chick of Williamstown, Mass.; and two brothers and a sister-in-law, Dan Kelleher of Paxton, Mass., and Bernie and Judy Kelleher of Valatie, N.Y.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Tom Kelleher.
A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave.
A graveside service with military honors will follow at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
