Harlan S. Olsen

Harlan S. Olsen, 91, of Astoria, died Friday, Jan. 25, 2013, in Astoria.

He was born March 8, 1921, in Chinook, Wash., to Oscar S. and Hulda C. (Lindstrom) Olsen.

After attending grade school in Chinook, he graduated from Ilwaco (Wash.) High School in 1939.

In 1942, he joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and served until March 1946. While in the service, he was an aircraft electrician and worked on B-17 aircraft.

On Sept. 9, 1950, he married Johanna “Jo Marie” Johansen. She preceded him in death Dec. 29, 2003.

After his term in the service, Mr. Olsen moved to Astoria in 1947, and began working at a car dealership for 11/2 years. He then became partners with Carl Swensen and formed the company, Carl and Harlan’s Tune-up Service, a partnership that lasted for 28 years. After his partner retired, he continued owning and operating the company until 1986.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church and Astoria Lions Club.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Marilyn and Tom Flanagan and Joanne and Tom Alfonse, all of Astoria; a son and daughter-in-law, Art and Penny Olsen of Astoria; four grandsons, Mark Flanagan and Nate Alfonse of Astoria, Nick Alfonse of Las Vegas and Trygve Olsen of Eugene; a sister-in-law, Kathryn “Kay” Olsen of Coberg; and a great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Jo Alfonse of Astoria.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Patrick Flanagan.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 1, at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave.

A graveside service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 2, at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, followed by a memorial at 1 p.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 725 33rd St.
