Carol Bartelmez Moore, 99, of Astoria, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, in Astoria.
She was born Feb. 16, 1913, in Chicago, to George W. and Erminnie (Hollis) Bartelmez.
She attended the University of Chicago Laboratory School, John Fiske Elementary School, and graduated from Hyde Park High School in 1930. She attended Carlton College, graduating in 1934, and the University of Chicago School of Social Service Administration from 1934 to 1935 and 1936 to 1937, and obtained a master’s degree. She also spent one year at the London School of Economics.
She was employed at the Cleveland City Hospital Social Services Department from 1937 to 1941.
On Sept. 22, 1939, she married Randolph Patton Moore, M.D. He preceded her in death.
When Mrs. Moore’s husband joined the U.S. Army Medical Corps in spring, 1941, she joined him at St. Thomas, Ky., and Camp Atterbury, Ind. She joined the American Red Cross as a medical social worker in fall, 1942, attached to the 65th General Hospital at Fort Bragg, N.C. In fall, 1943, she was sent to England and served at several station hospitals there. She returned to the U.S. in fall, 1945, and reunited with her husband. The couple lived in Cleveland, Ohio, then moved to Port Angeles, Wash., in July, 1947, then to Astoria in February, 1961.
She was a member of the American Association of University Women, American Red Cross, American Civil Liberties Union, PEO Sisterhood, Clatsop County Historical Society, Columbia River Maritime Museum, Women’s Political Caucus and several environmental organizations.
Family members said she enjoyed sailing on her family’s motor sailor, Merilintu, from 1982 to 1995, traveling to eastern Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and the inland waterway to Baltimore.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Melody Moore of Oregon City and Robert and China Moore of Portland; and two grandchildren, Jesse and Rose Moore of Portland.
She was preceded in death by a son, Fitz-Randolph Moore, May 31, 2012.
