Daniel Easdale Crockett, 80, of Astoria, died Sunday, February 17, 2013 at his home. Crockett was born July 12, 1932 in Ottawa, Kansas to Harold and LaVonn (Easdale) Crockett. He attended elementary and high school in Ottawa. He earned an Associate Degree in Criminal Justice from Saddleback Community College, a BSBA from University of Phoenix, and attended numerous military and law enforcement courses.
He joined the US Marine Corps when he was 17, and served in Korea, Viet Nam, and Nicaragua, among other locations. He received numerous medals and commendations. He earned a field commission and took pride in being a Mustang. He retired as a Captain after 21 years of service. He believed that "once a Marine always a Marine."
Crockett was active in the Boy Scouts. In addition to being a troop leader for many years, he served as District Commissioner in Phoenix, AZ. He was a Vigil Member and recipient of the Silver Beaver Award.
After retiring from the USMC, Crockett worked in law enforcement for the Jefferson County Sheriff Department, Colorado; the Orange County Sheriff Department, California; Arizona Attorney General's Office Medical Fraud Unit; and Clatsop County Sheriff Department. He received numerous commendations for his outstanding service.
Crockett was active in the Masons for over 50 years: Symbolic, Capitular, Cryptic, Chivalric, Scottish Rite, and various attendant bodies including the Red Cross of Constantine. He held many local, regional, and state offices. He believed that Masonry made "good men even better."
He was active in various organizations including the 1st and 3rd Marine Division Associations, the Mustang Associations, the Marine Corps League, National Association for Uniformed Services, Military Officers Association of America, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and state of Oregon Sheriff's Association. He also spent much time volunteering and contributing to the community.
Crockett was known for his rollicking sense of humor, his belief in service to one's community and country, his integrity, kindness and loyalty.
Crockett is survived by his wife Jo; their children and their spouses: John Paul Crockett of Glendale, AZ; Michael and Amber Crockett of Portland; Susan Crockett of Texas; grandchildren, Timothy and Taylor; four sisters, Jerri MaComber of Ottawa, Saralou Crockett of Topeka, Ivalee Dougherty of Topeka, Catherine Casey of Ottawa; three brothers, Hank Crockett of Ottawa, Douglas Crockett of Emporia, and Stephen Crockett, Atlantic City, Wyoming. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and LaVonn Crockett, brother, David Crockett, and sister Deborah Jacobsen.
A Memorial service will be held at Grace Episcopal Church, 1545 Franklin in Astoria, on Saturday, February 23, 2013, at ?1:00 p.m. A reception will follow in the adjacent Parish Hall.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to Clatsop County Animal Shelter, the Humane Society of Pacific County, or a charity of one's choice.
