Edward Bates was born in Astoria, Oregon, and raised in Seaside. He lived in Seaside all of his life. Ed graduated from Seaside High School and went on to attend Oregon State University. He served in the Armed forces for two years and was a Korean War Veteran.
Ed married Nancy Rogers on July 25th, 1953, and together they raised four successful children. He worked for Crown Zellerbach for 33 years and then worked for Kent Price Reality for 20 years.
He served on the board of the Gearhart Fire Department and the Seaside School Board. He was a member of the Astoria Golf and Country Club, American Legion, Elks and the Portland Society of Magicians.
He was a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather to his family. His survivors include his wife: Nancy Bates of Seaside, his son, Tom Bates of Gig Harbour, Wa., his daughter in-law Liz Bates, his son Eddie Bates of Portland, Oregon, his daughter in-law Trish Bates, his son David Bates of Portland, his daughter Barbara of Naselle, Wa. and his son in-law Michael Swanson.
Additional survivors include grandsons T.J. Bates, Eddie Bates, Travis Bates and granddaughters Sara Swanson Groce and Laura Swanson Seiferd. Great grandchildren include Cannon Seiferd and Tyler Groce.
A Full Military Honors Service will be held for the public, friends and family on Friday, April 5th beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. The address is 11800 SE Mt. Scott Boulevard, Portland.
Memorial contributions may be sent to the Providence Seaside Extended Care Unit in Seaside, Oregon.
