Betty May Glarum

July 29, 1918 — May 27, 2013

Betty passed away peacefully at home after a short illness. Her husband, L. Stanley, and son, Kristoffer, preceded her in death. She was born and raised in Portland, the daughter of Esther Swanson and Heman H. Hall. She is survived by daughters Susan and Nancy, and son Jan, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Betty attended Franklin High School in Portland, and Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, WA. She married Stanley in 1942. They settled in Portland, where Stanley taught music at Lewis & Clark College while she stayed home and raised their four children. In the late 1950s, they bought a cabin in Cannon Beach and thereafter spent weekends and vacations at the beach, which they both loved. After Stanley retired in 1975, they moved full-time to their beach house. He died in 1976.

Betty eventually moved to Surf Pines and then to Warrenton, where she lived until her death. She had a beautiful home on Long Lake, where she greatly enjoyed watching the birds, wood ducks, squirrels and chipmunks. She truly loved all animals, especially horses (she was an excellent horsewoman in her youth), dogs and cats, of which she had many over the years.

Among her other interests were reading, cheering on the Blazers, singing in choirs, playing piano, traveling, gardening, visiting with friends, swimming and writing. Her homes reflected her design and decorating abilities.

Everyone who knew her would agree she was a smart, funny, optimistic and feisty person with a big personality. She will leave a correspondingly big hole in our hearts.

Memorial donations may be sent to Lewis & Clark College, 0615 Palatine Hill Road, MSC 88, Portland, OR, 97219. Please put “Glarum Scholarship, in memory of Betty” on the memo line of the check. Donations may also be sent to the American Humane Society.

There will be a gathering at her home in Warrenton to celebrate her life at a time and place to be announced. On June 22 at 1:30 p.m. at Lewis and Clark College in Portland, there will be a choral workshop by Kathy FitzGibbon, Assistant Professor and Director of Choral Activities, including a performance by the Alumni and Community Choir. The workshop and performance are being dedicated to Betty.

Interment will be in the family plot at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
