Donald Leeland Webb, 82, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, in Astoria. He was born June 7, 1931, in Astoria, to Jack Leeland Webb and Aina Karen Carlson Webb.
Don was a native of Astoria, where the family lived. He graduated from Astoria High School in 1949, and worked at Van Camp Seafood, where he met his future wife, Joan Leinenweber. They were married May 23, 1951. Joan preceded Don in death December 6, 2005. They enjoyed 54 years of marriage.
Don enlisted into the Coast Guard in 1950 and was discharged in 1953. In 1955, Don bought a working share at the Astoria Plywood Mill for 37 years. He served as President and Secretary of the Astoria Plywood Mill for several years.
On July 24, 2011, Don married Linda Anne Foster Quinn in Astoria, OR. Linda preceded him in death, May 6, 2013.
Don was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Astoria, and in 1995 started working at the church as a custodian for several years, and also the Food Bank at the church.
He was a member of the Astoria Elks Lodge, American Legion, Clatsop Post 12, Clatsop Co. Search & Rescue, Sunset Empire Amateur Radio Club, Clatsop Co. Armature Radio Emergency Service, Astoria Fire Dept. Community Emergency Response Team; The Astoria Riverfront Trolley Organization; The Loaves and Fishes meals for Seniors. Don was a constant volunteer for special events like the Hood to Coast Relay, Astoria Crab and Seafood Festival, and many others. Don worked on several movie locations in our local area. He always had a need to know what was happening in our community.
Don was a very active volunteer for 20 years with the Astoria Traffic Safety Committee and helped form the Alliance for Community Traffic Safety (ACTS of Oregon).
Don enjoyed attending the Astoria City Council meetings, starting in 1956, and only missed a few meetings in the 50-plus years. He attended more meetings than any single city council member, and his mission was to keep the citizens of Astoria informed of city activities and was known as the “watch dog” for our government agencies. He spent many hours researching local history and policies of government officials.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Elaine Webb of Astoria, OR; a daughter, Diane Conley of Des Moines, WA; two granddaughters, Parker Conley and Natalie Conley of Des Moines, WA; and a brother, John Webb of Astoria, OR.
He was also preceded in death also by a baby boy, David Allen Webb, who died in 1967.
Public Graveside Services with Military Honors will be held Monday, July 1, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at Ocean View Cemetery, Warrenton, Oregon.
A reception will follow at Peace Lutheran Church in their Fellowship Room, 565 12th Street, Astoria, Oregon.
Memorial Contributions may be given to Astoria Riverfront Trolley or the Astoria Community Response Team.
