Charles moved to Astoria in 1960 while serving in the United States Coast Guard, where he met and married Carol Finneymore on June 23, 1962. During the first few years of their marriage he was also stationed in Garibaldi and Coos Bay, Oregon, then returning to Astoria, where he worked At Lum’s Auto as one of their first mechanics.
In the early 1980s, he moved to Medford, Oregon, for a few years, also working as a mechanic, then returning to Astoria, where he continued to work for Lum’s, and then was an accomplished carpenter.
After his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, fishing, golfing and working on their live-aboard boat. He also loved to travel with his wife in their motor home. Particularly he enjoyed sharing in the Bible education work as one of Jehovah’s witnesses.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years Carol Arthur of Astoria, his son and daughter-in-law Tom and Tina Arthur of Ecuador, daughter and son-in-law Tania and John Hellingson of Astoria, son Tony Arthur of Arkansas, and 6 grandchildren Deborah Summers, Jackie Weaver, Melody Arthur, Danielle Arthur, all from California, Brittany Hellingson of Washington, Grandson Austin Hellingson of Astoria, and 3 great-grandchildren Allison and Damien Summers of California, Lucas Hebert of California, and siblings brother Gean Arthur of California, Bud Sanders of Colorado, sister Barbara Ellington of Kansas and sister Marthanna Jacobs of Kansas, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held Saturday, September 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1760 7th Street, Astoria, Oregon.
