John Patrick Barendse, age 54, of Knappa, passed away peacefully in his sleep, Tuesday, November 12, 2013. John was born December 12, 1958, in Astoria, to Mike and Donna Barendse. He attended school in Westport until the family moved to Knappa in 1972. He graduated from Knappa High School in 1977. John married the love of his life, Cindy Olson, on September 2, 1977, in Astoria. John began his logging career soon after graduation. John started his company Quality Timber Cutting with his partners in 1989. One of John’s most gratifying accomplishments was employing and teaching his son and numerous nephews the logging trade. He thoroughly enjoyed the article in Loggers World documenting him working alongside his dad, brothers and brothers-in-law. John had a passion for coaching. He has coached his children, his grandchildren, nieces, nephews and numerous kids of the Knappa Community. At the age of 54 he was still the youngest guy at heart on the team. John was all about his large close-knit family. He had a special way of making each family member feel like they were his favorite. He loved the Fourth of July and family get-togethers. John had an “explosive” personality, competitive spirit, sweet and gentle heart. John loved being a parent, but being Grandpa John was his most rewarding legacy. His pride and joy were his grandsons: Michal, Jaxson, Gavin and Kolson. John is survived by his wife Cindy, daughter Krissy Goodman and her husband John, son Matt Barendse and Laura Holt. Eight brothers and sisters, numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved very much, and his beloved dog, Dozer. There will be a potluck on Sunday, November 17th, 2:00 p.m., at Knappa High School. The family welcomes any pictures you would like to share. Donations may be made to Red Devils Football or The Knappa Booster Club. “Because someone we love is in Heaven, there is a little bit of Heaven in our homes and hearts.”
