Gwen Niebuhr of Seaside, Oregon, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, in Portland, Oregon. She was 84. Gwen was born to Almond and Opal Carmody in Scottsbluff, Nebraska, on April 5, 1929.
Mrs. Niebuhr graduated from Scottsbluff High School in 1947. She moved to Cannon Beach in 1947 to work in the Cannon Beach Mercantile Store owned by her grandparents, the Dennons. She married Richard Udell in 1951 and raised their four children: Dick Udell Jr., Mary Udell and Donald Udell of Seaside, Oregon, and Tommy Udell of Dallas, Oregon. The two later divorced.
In 1978 Gwen and Ray found each other and later married. They resided in Cannon Beach for 28 years. Gwen was the beauty salon owner of Raymond’s in Cannon Beach for 12 years. She was also the bookkeeper for Ray Niebuhr Plumbing for 36 years. Gwen was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years.
Her family and friends remember her for her quick wit, dry sense of humor and feisty attitude. She loved her pets, especially her dogs Max and Oscar. Gwen also enjoyed scrap-booking and was the keeper of all family photos.
Gwen was preceded in death by her eldest son, Dick Udell, her granddaughter, Lori Udell, and her beloved husband, Raymond Niebuhr.
Gwendolyn Niebuhr is survived in death by her children: Don Udell, Mary Udell, both of Seaside, Oregon, and Tom Udell of Dallas, Oregon; three stepchildren: Sue McCormick of Polson, Montana, Sally Niebuhr of Seaside, Oregon, and Mike Niebuhr of Cannon Beach, Oregon. Gwen will also be missed by 11 grandchildren, six step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.
