Arnie entered this world on November 27, 1929, in Astoria, to Arnold Sr. and Bernice Johnson. Arnie lived his entire life in Astoria, and graduated from Astoria High School. In his youth he spent time gillnetting with his father and working on the Astoria Ferry before joining in the family business, Columbia Fruit and Produce, started by his father in 1948. In 1951, he met his wife-to-be Geraldine (Gerry) Pakenen when delivering produce to Naselle. With apple blossoms decorating the altar and church, Arnie and Gerry were wed on May 4, 1952. For the next 62 years, they had a wonderful life raising their family and working together at Columbia Fruit and Produce. Arnie became partners with his father in the business, and took over the operations after his dad’s retirement. Arnie and his wife Gerry operated the business for many years until their retirement. Their eldest son Bruce and his wife, Cece now run the business. Arnie enjoyed all sports, especially golfing and fishing. He also enjoyed visiting with his customers while delivering produce each morning, vacationing in Hawaii and watching his grandsons’ high school and college sporting events. Arnie was a member of the Naval Reserves. He was an active member of the Astoria Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Sons of Norway, Scandinavian Benevolent Society, First Lutheran Church, American Legion and Astoria Golf & Country Club. He is survived by his wife, Gerry, their sons and daughters-in-law, Bruce (Cecelia) and Dale (Margaret), grandsons Kye, Sam and Max, all of Astoria, and 3 nephews and 1 niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Joyce. He was a very proud “papa” and his life was all about family. He will be sorely missed. A memorial service for Arnie will be held Saturday, April 12th, at First Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. in Astoria, with a light lunch to follow. Contributions can be made to First Lutheran Church or charity of your choice.
