Grover William Utzinger, local businessman, died in Astoria at his home. He was born Nov. 22, 1927, in Astoria, to Grover and Hazel (Wallace) Utzinger.
After graduating from Astoria High School, he served in the U.S. Navy. He owned several businesses, such as a self-service laundry, Custard King, Columbia Tavern, Charlie’s Tavern and Mermaid Tavern, and was a local contractor in Astoria.
In 1974, he bought Utzinger’s Hardware, where he worked until his passing.
He is survived by three children, Cassandra Utzinger, Albert Utzinger and Teresa Utzinger, all of Astoria; a sister, Ruth Hope of Albany, OR; three grandchildren, Chance Searls, Natalia Utzinger-Waring, and Brandon Utzinger, all of Astoria; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert Utzinger and Carl Utzinger.
At his request, there will be no funeral. A graveside service will be held at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton at 3 p.m. Friday, June 6.
A celebration of life will follow on Saturday, June 7, at the American Legion in Astoria at 1 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Clatsop Post 12 American Legion.
