Helen Marie Frans Aho of Astoria, Oregon, passed peacefully on August 8, 2014. Helen was born on September 2, 1930, in Astoria, Oregon. She grew up in Seaside with her mother, Ida Tilanen Frans, and father, Herman Frans. She attended Seaside High School and graduated in 1948.
Soon after graduation, she moved to Astoria, where she was employed by The Daily Astorian. On March 4, 1955, Helen married Edward Aho, also of Astoria. They bought a home on Franklin Avenue, where they raised three children, David, Julie and Michael. Once her children were all in elementary school, Helen returned to work for the Astorian Printing Co., where she worked as a bookbinder until the age of 65; she retired with over 34 years of service to the company.
Helen was a lover of all animals, especially cats. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, playing pinochle, solving crossword and jigsaw puzzles, clam digging and going for rides to the beach and countryside. She was proud of her Finnish heritage and loved reading the Historical Society’s Cumtux publications. Helen is survived by her husband, Ed, son David and daughter-in-law Darla of Astoria, son Michael and daughter-in-law Tami of Warrenton, daughter Julie and son-in-law Glenn Waddell of Bellevue Wash., five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A family graveside service will take place at Ocean View Cemetery.
