Larry Jay Barrows, 66, of Astoria, passed away on October 8, 2014.
Larry was born in Hillsboro, Ore., on Nov. 2, 1947, to Ernest J. and Virginia M. (Varenhorst) Barrows. In 1959, he moved with his family to Astoria, Ore., and attended Astor Junior High and Astoria High School.
While at the high school, he participated in track sports and set a school record in the high jump. He graduated in 1965 and received a scholarship to Oregon State University. He majored in English and graduated in 1969 as an honor student.
Larry worked at the Astoria Golf and Country Club as a maintenance supervisor on the club building for 30 years. He then went to work for Englund Marine and Industrial Supply until he was afflicted by primary progressive aphasia, a rare disease that gradually takes away words until there is no speech left.
In 1969, he married Linda H. Andrews. They divorced. In 1971, he married Margaret A. Barrett. They later divorced.
Larry enjoyed writing poetry, gardening, camping and being outdoors.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald K. Barrows. He is survived by his parents; his daughter and son-in-law, Maya and Darin Mackey of S. Elgin, Ill.; his sister-in-law Margaret E.R. Barrows of Bellevue, Wash.; and numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014, at 11 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, 725 33rd St., Astoria, Ore., followed by a reception. Graveside services will be at Greenwood Cemetery at 2 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made to the First Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
