Stanley “Stan” Harny, 92, of Knappa, Ore., died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2014, in Astoria, Ore.
He was born Jan. 12, 1922, in Hamlet, to Mitchell Horecny and Alice Sinese.
In 1947, he married Mary Anne Grycko in Clatskanie, Ore. In 1976, he married Pat Christopher.
Mr. Harny served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. He was in the Color Guard and received the Expert and Combat Infantry Badge, M1 Rifle Expert, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Star, Good Conduct Medal, and Victory Medal. He was also part of the occupation forces in Japan following the bomb.
He spent most of his life in Knappa and Seaside. A mink farmer for 50 years, he started the business in Clatskanie, Ore. He also worked for Bell Buoy Crab, retiring at age 65.
He enjoyed clam digging, following the Portland Trail Blazers, boxing and baseball, and he loved animals.
He is survived by a son, Dennis Harny of Bend, Ore.; daughter, Christie Larson of Knappa; son-in-law, Ernie Larson of Knappa; granddaughter, Mindy Edgar of Michigan; granddaughter, Madeline Witt of Michigan; grandson, Jake Harny of Michigan; granddaughter, Lara Moore of Clatskanie, Ore.;grandson, Ian Amanna of Hillsboro, Ore.; granddaughter, Alyssa Harny of Colorado; great-grandson, Aidan Edgar of Michigan; great-grandson, Liam Edgar of Michigan; great-grandson, Sawyer Witt of Michigan; great-granddaughter, Emma Moore of Clatskanie; great-granddaughter, Hailey Amanna of Hillsboro, Ore.; and great-grandson Hayden Amanna of Hillsboro, Ore.
He was preceded in death by a son, John Harny; grandson, Joshua Amanna; grandson, Adam Harny; former wife, Mary Harny; and former wife, Pat Harny.
Private interment is at Greenwood Cemetery.
A celebration of life will be held Sunday, Nov. 16, at 2 p.m., at the Svensen Senior Center.
