Marietta Hill, age 89, of Astoria, Ore., passed away Feb. 9, 2015, in Astoria. Marietta was born to Elis and Helmi Aspegren Posti in Simo, Finland, on March 24, 1925. She was raised and schooled in Finland. In 1954, at the age of 29, she and a friend made a trip to the United States to visit her aunt, Amanda Aspegren Hellberg, in Astoria. She came with the intention of visiting, only, but when she met her future husband, Ellis Hill, that all changed. They were married in Astoria on March 18,1956, and she has resided here ever since. Marietta’s husband was a commercial fisherman, and she began working at local fish canneries during the summers when he was away. She was a hard worker, and put her best effort into everything she did. She also enjoyed growing beautiful dahlias, clam digging, intricate handwork, and baking Finnish cardamom bread and tarts. Her Finnish heritage was a big part of her life, and she enjoyed lifelong friendships with many of her Finnish counterparts. Marietta was a devoted member of Peace Lutheran Church. For many years. Marietta and Ellis enjoyed spending part of the winter months in Indio, Calif. They also made numerous trips back to Finland, of which Ellis was also a native, to visit family and friends. Marietta was preceded in death by her parents, Elis and Helmi Posti, and by her husband, Ellis. In Finland, she is survived by: sister Laila Yliniemi of Kemi, Finland; sister Alli Uunola of Maksniemi, Finland; brother Mauno Posti and his wife, Alli, of Maksniemi, Finland; five nieces and two nephews; as well as their children and grandchildren. She is also survived by: sister-in-law Ella Hill of Astoria; nieces Jane Pelosi of Atlanta, Ga., Melissa Powell of Astoria, Ore., Sue Anne Olson of Stayton, Ore., and their children; and numerous cousins of the Nimmo, Knickerbocker, and Hellberg families. Graveside services will be held Tuesday, Feb.17, 2015, at 10:30 a.m. at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, Ore. A memorial service will follow at Peace Lutheran Church, Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2015, at 1 p.m., 565 12th St., Astoria, Ore. Memorial contributions may be given to the Peace Lutheran Memorial Fund.
