Harriette Elizabeth Forney, 83, passed away Feb. 12, 2015, in Astoria. She was born August 3, 1931, in San Diego, Calif., to Edwin Mathews Chase and Mary Sigfrid McDermott. Harriette grew up with her parents in Warrenton, Ore.
She married her high school sweetheart, Hugh Forney in 1949 in Kelso, Wash. Hugh preceded her in death Feb. 23, 1989. They had three children. In 1952 Harriette, along with her family, moved to Skagway, Alaska, working for the U. S. Postal System. In 1962 the family returned to Oregon, settling in the Knappa area. At that time, she worked for the Postal Service in Clatskanie, Ore. After a few years, they moved to Birkenfeld, Ore., and took up farming and logging. The family later settled in Warrenton, Ore.
Gardening was a passion and she was known for her beautiful roses, dahlias and begonias. She is also known for her wonderful cooking. Her specialty was her pies with flaky crusts. If you were lucky enough to partake, then you were indeed fortunate. She was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants which provided a great rivalry with her brother, Ed Chase, a lifelong fan of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Harriette loved driving her Pontiac Firebird with her tunes cranked on her cassette recorder. She loved all music, but particularly classic rock with Bob Seger, Meatloaf, and Billy Idol, to name a few. Most of all, she will be remembered for her love of family. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and auntie.
Survivors include a daughter, Christine Patterson of Astoria; and a son and daughter-in-law, Keene and Cynthia Forney of Clatskanie. She had four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren which include: Kelley Patterson of Astoria, and Melissa Patterson with children Zachary, Kellan, Luke and Delaney Patterson, Tiffany Patterson Tarabochia of Astoria and Brian Tarabochia, with children Taylor, and Joey Tarabochia, Kyle Patterson of Astoria, Keene Forney Jr. and wife Melanie Forney, and children Skyler, Kenna, Keegan Forney and Kyle L’Amie. A sister and brother-in-law, Mary Jo Chase Percey and Gerald Percey of Beaverton. A brother and sister-in-law, Edwin Chase and wife Lawanna Chase of Warrenton.
She was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Ada Lou Chase Grafing and Baron Grafing; a son-in-law, Danny Patterson in 1988; and a son, Kevin Forney in 1993.
A celebration of life service will be held Friday, Feb. 27, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, Ore.
