Kenneth Dale Hageman

Kenneth Dale Hageman, 78, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015, in Portland, Ore.

Ken was born Nov. 9, 1936, to Oscar and Hazel Fish Hageman in Bryan, Ohio. At the age of 2, his family moved to the Fresno, Calif., area, where he attended school, graduating from Clovis High School.

He entered the Army in 1956. In 1958, he and his dad moved to Astoria to open a shingle mill. It was here that he met his wife, Jean, and became the loving father of her five children.

In 1963, he began working at several local grocery stores. Known by many as the “produce guy,” Ken retired from Fred Meyer in 2010, after 17 years.

In his earlier years, he enjoyed playing pool on the Hazel’s Tavern team, where he made many lifelong friends. He also enjoyed couples bowling with good friends Dick and Jerry Bartoldus.

Traveling was one of his main interests. He went to Mexico, Hawaii, Canada, California, Arizona, Texas, Nevada, Louisiana and Florida. His favorite was cruises. He loved sitting in the sun in Indio, Calif.

Before his heart attack in October 2012, he enjoyed his afternoons by talking with his friends over a couple of beers at the Desdemona. He liked to watch anything on TV involving space and Judge Judy. Kenneth was known by anyone who was lucky enough to know him as a very kind, caring and polite person.

Becoming a grandfather was probably the highlight of his life. He wanted to be involved in all his grandchildren’s sports and other activities, and making sure they had plenty of snacks. Family gatherings, barbecues with Ron and Judie Norris, and Christmas were very special to him.

He is survived by his wife, Jean; son, Kenny (Rhonda); daughter, Tami; son, Ronny (Kim); daughter, Micki; son, David (Jackie); and son, Joey (Mary Jo). Grandchildren include Darian, Trey, Jonathan, Christopher, Jill, Cami, C J, Summer, Justin, Caila, Myles, Brandon, Jacob, Megan, Madison, Carole, and Caitie. Also surviving are 16 great-grandchildren; brothers, Bobby (Susan) and Gene; sisters-in-law, Beverly and Dottie; Uncle Lisle (Doris); and many loved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Wayne and Gary; and daughter, Toni.

Graveside services for family and friends will be held Wednesday, May 20, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Astoria.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
