Darrylene Joan Bergerson-Cokley, 55, was a devoted mother, daughter, sister and nanny to her grandchildren and family.
She was well recognized for her many miles spent walking along the Astoria waterfront and the local hills of Astoria, always with a smile on her face and a friendly wave. Her love for everyone was unconditional and her spirit was unbroken.
Darrylene was born March 25, 1960, at St Mary’s Hospital in Astoria. She is the daughter of Darryl and the late Marlene Bergerson.
Darrylene passed peacefully Dec. 5, 2015, at Columbia Memorial Hospital surrounded by her closest loved ones.
As a child Darrylene was active in the Luther League at the First Lutheran Church, Scandinavian dancing, dancing at Maddox Studio and Girl Scouts.
Darrylene graduated from Astoria High School, where she participated in basketball, volleyball, softball and was a member of the cheerleading squad. Post high school she attended the University of Oregon, where she served as the president of Alpha Phi sorority during her sophomore year.
As an adult, Darrylene coached youth league sports teams, she was a school bus driver for the Knappa School District, played on all-star traveling teams and enjoyed exercising. She is best known by her children and grandchildren as “Nanny,” and she spent many hours at Tapiola Park running with her rascals.
Nanny is survived by her four children: Heidi and her spouse, Jack Steinhauer; Digger Cokley; Katie and her spouse, Dennis Sturgell; and Marlie and her spouse, Matti Haggren. Her family blessed her with nine grandchildren: Jaxon, Blayson, Presley, Cannon, Riley, Ryder, Rayce, Oskar and Hank. Nanny had several other babies who called her nanny as well.
