Mildred Lavonne Layton

February 10, 1933 — December 12, 2015

Mildred LaVonne (Jones) Layton was born in Saguache, Colorado, the daughter of William Franklin Jones and Florence Jeanette (Lambert) Jones. She grew up in Colorado, and loved its majestic beauty.

She graduated from high school in Saguache, Colorado, as class valedictorian. Her brother, Sam, and her two sisters, Pat and Laurel, predeceased her.

LaVonne lived in Alaska, Nebraska, Wyoming and Texas before moving to Astoria, Oregon, in 1965. Astoria was the childhood home of her husband, Robert Bishop Layton, whom she married in 1963, and who passed away in 2006.

LaVonne was a devoted Christian, and she loved her church family. She faithfully attended the First Baptist Church in Astoria for 50 years. She taught Sunday school, helped with many church functions and loved to sing. She lived her faith, and was well liked by everyone around her. Her life was always focused on her family, especially her children and grandchildren. She loved Oregon’s outdoors, especially its beaches.

She is survived by her five children, Donald Duncan of Olney, Oregon, Sharon Boring of Eugene, Oregon, Richard (and Robynn) Duncan of Springfield, Oregon, Sandra Delekson of Astoria, Oregon, and John (and Karen) Layton of Warrenton, Oregon. She is also survived by eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Astoria at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2, 2016. The church is located at 349 Seventh St.
