Craig Thomas Myers

Craig Thomas Myers of Astoria, Oregon, died May 5, 2016, in St Helens, Washington, after losing his battle with cancer. He was 61 years old.

Craig was born on June 7, 1954, to Dorothy May Myers (Lavigne) and Donald Thomas “D.T.” Myers, at the Naval Infirmary on Tongue Point. A lifelong resident of Astoria, he attended Astoria High School, leaving school when he was 17 to join the U.S. Army, and returning to his hometown once his brief military career during wartime came to a close. He has been a member of the American Legion ever since.

He was well-known in the area as a charming and funny guy to many, a bit of a troublemaker to some, and as a beloved son, brother and father to those who were lucky enough to call him any of those things. Regardless of his propensity for getting into trouble, he remained a staunch supporter of the local law enforcement, stating, “Hey, they’re just doing their jobs. We get along just fine!” when people were surprised by his reverence towards the police. He called everyone “buddy.”

Among other things, Craig was an artist, a fantastic storyteller, an accomplished pool player and a prolific poet. He had a talent for building things, including but not limited to humane animal traps that he and his youngest sister used to set up around the neighborhood to help with relocating moles and other “nuisance critters” up into the woods, to keep them from being exterminated by frustrated homeowners. Unfortunately, the traps caught more very annoyed neighborhood cats than moles, however, and finally he moved on to other projects. And the cats rejoiced.

Working several years as a handyman and landscaper prior to being struck by a car in 2012, which left him disabled, Craig spent his remaining years in Astoria, Oregon, living near his mother and driving her crazy in the sweetest way possible.

Craig was preceded in death by his father in 1981; and by his sister, Roxanne Marie Myers, in 1996. He is survived by his mother, Dorothy; his two sisters, Carrie Sue Ho of Knappa, Oregon, and Lisa Ann Curtis of Birch Bay, Washington; and his daughter, Kenzie Myers of Westport, Washington.
