Marie Clara Rummell

February 7, 1931 — May 16, 2016

Marie Laferriere Rummell joined her husband, Donald P. Rummell, her daughter, Claudette Hale, son, Anthony and granddaughter Erin Betts, her parents, Alfred and Clara Laferriere, and five of her six siblings on May 16.

Marie was born in East Douglas, Massachusetts, in February 1931. The family moved to Oregon in 1948. Marie graduated from Star of the Sea High School. She met Don at Mass in Warrenton. They married in September 1949. They visited the elderly at St. Mary’s Hospital Nursing home in full wedding regalia to share their joy with her friends there.

She was president, for several terms, of the Oregon Catholic Daughters and the Altar Society. She was also active in both civic and church functions, which she and Don volunteered to do without hesitation. Marie invited homeless persons to share family meals. This was learned from her mother reading “The Lives of The Saints” in French before nightly evening prayers and Rosary.

She was the proud mother of 16 children, Donna, Martha, Becky, Claudette, David, Julie, Tim, Luke, Joel, Max, Rose, Laura, Kurt, Paul, Anthony and Anne; plus 74 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Marie maintained a firm faith despite being tested with the deaths of two adult children, a granddaughter and her husband. Filling the empty spot by her death will be quite difficult.

A funeral Mass is being held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 21, at St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1465 Grand Ave. A reception follows at the church, then at 1:30 p.m. there is a graveside service at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
