Kathleen "Kay" Isabel Fackler

August 8, 1923 — August 12, 2016

Kathleen “Kay” Isabel Fackler passed away on Friday, Aug. 12, 2016, at her home in Warrenton. She was a proud 93-year-old Scottish Christian. Kay was born Aug. 8, 1923, in Tacoma, Washington, to George and Christian (Burns) Smith.

After high school, Kay attended and graduated from a business college in Bellingham, and worked at several insurance firms. She met her best friend and husband, Robert Fackler, at a Baptist Church youth event prior to World War II, and they were married on Dec. 15, 1945.

The couple lived in Pullman, Washington, and Hermiston, Oregon, where they raised their two children before moving to their home in Warrenton during the summer of 1973. An avid world traveler, Kay and her husband, Bob, volunteered with Mercy Ships, a floating hospital, visiting areas including Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico and Costa Rica. She and her daughter also traveled through Europe and South America.

Kay valued the relationships and friendships she formed at the Warrenton Senior Center. She and Bob faithfully attended every week, and found comfort in the community there. She belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, the League of Women Voters, Pioneer Presbyterian Church (and was a deacon there), First Lutheran Church and the Warrenton Grade School reading program.

She enjoyed her vegetable and flower gardens where she grew tomatoes, potatoes, snap peas, oriental lilies, dahlias and more. Kay loved to chop and stack the firewood her husband would cut on the beach. She loved to sew and knit hats that she donated to local hospitals for newborn babies. She was famous for her baking, especially her cinnamon swirl bread, Santa Claus cookies, cringles and Chex Mix. A lifelong dog and cat lover, Kay enjoyed the company of many four-legged friends.

Kay is survived by her daughter, Nancy, of Warrenton; a son, R. Brian Fackler of Vancouver, Washington; a sister, Barbara Kenner of Lynwood, Washington; grandsons Robert and his wife Lindsay Ledgerwood of Medford, Oregon, Rick Ledgerwood of Warrenton, Oregon, and Mathew Fackler of Vancouver, Washington; granddaughter Kathleen Fackler of Portland; and great-granddaughter Marley Ledgerwood of Medford.

A memorial service will be held Friday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 725 33rd St., Astoria OR 97103, with a light lunch afterwards.

Inurnment will be at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton.
