Carl was raised in Knappa, Oregon. He went to school there and graduated from Knappa High School, class of 1951. Carl was proud to be a veteran, and belonged to the American Legion. He served in the Korean War, and was at Heartbreak Ridge as a corporal in the U.S. Army 158 FAB 45th Division.
Shortly after his honorable discharge he met and married his lifelong love, Marjorie Ruth Lonquist on Sept. 17, 1957, in South Bend, Washington.
Carl worked for Maritime, Standard Oil, and retired from Johnson Oil Co. in Jeffers Gardens.
In his day, he loved to fish, hunt deer, birds and other assorted critters. He loved to dig razor clams at the beach. He set traps and cooked crawdads, smoked fish and pickled his own salmon.
Carl was a real man’s man. He said what he thought, believed what he believed and had a flair for humor. He loved a good joke. Everywhere he went, he would tell jokes. He got much joy in his heart when he made people laugh.
Carl had an incredible talent for memorizing the poetry his mother wrote, along with other authors. He loved going to family events and high school reunions. You could count on him at every event to get up and recite the poetry he loved, that honored his mother.
Carl had three daughters with Margie, a few grandkids, and one great-granddaughter. One thing he missed was having a son, then along came Joshua Peterson. It was a match made in heaven. They went everywhere together. They both played pool like pros. They loved cars, and having lunch together out at the Cove at Seaside or at Jones Beach near Westport.
Carl is survived by three daughters, Susan L. Gerard of Kent, Washington, and Deanna J. Davis and Marianne G. Peterson of Astoria, Oregon; three grandchildren, Scott M. Gerard of Fife, Washington, and Christy A. Peterson and Joshua R. Peterson of Astoria, Oregon; a great-granddaughter, Emily Rose Pickering of Astoria, Oregon; two nephews, John K. Lonquist of Astoria, Oregon, and Glen J. Lonquist of Portland, Oregon; a niece, Tina J. Gleason of Olney, Oregon; and many close Olson and Hartill cousins from near and far.

Carl was a great example of how to work hard, save money and that family should always come first.
