A longtime resident of Jewell, Donald “Don” William Hanthorn passed away peacefully Sept. 18, 2016, at his home with his family near by.
Don was born in Indianola, Nebraska, to Leonard “Buck” and Barbara Hanthorn. At age 11, he moved with his family to Elsie, Oregon. He attended school in Elsie, and later graduated from Jewell High School in 1948. After school, he started working in the woods as a logger, the occupation he loved.
Don married Patricia Konzich in 1951, a loyal marriage of 65 years. They raised three children: Barbara, Diane and Robert.
Don and his father Buck formed Hanthorn Logging Co. in 1953. They worked together until 1971, when Buck retired. Don continued logging, and in 1977 his son Bob joined him. They formed Hanthorn Logging Inc., and worked together until Don’s retirement in 2004.
Don and Pat loved having family and friends stop for coffee and BS around the kitchen table. Many logging shows were carried out, and thousands of gallons of coffee were consumed, and maybe a few cocktails.
Don is survived by his loving wife Patricia; their children, Barbara Olstedt, Diane Lucia and Bob Hanthorn; nine grandchildren, Amy, Matt, Mark, Dan, Michael, Nina, Edward, Amanda and Scott; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine Twombly and Shirley Morgan; and several nieces and nephews.
Don is preceded in death by his parents, Buck and Barbara Hanthorn; and sisters, Barbara Hanthorn and Helena Reierson.
Services will be held Friday, Sept. 23 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church in Seaside. Rosary is at 10:30 a.m., and the funeral is at 11 a.m. Graveside services will be held at the Elsie Cemetery at 1 p.m. A reception will be held at Camp 18 following graveside ceremony.
