Harold A. Snow was born in Astoria, Oregon, on March 20, 1941, to Harold H. and Helen (Nordquist) Snow. Hal was raised in Astoria, attending Lewis & Clark Central grade school and Astoria High School.
After a stint in the National Guard, Hal attended the University of Oregon, and subsequently graduated from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1968.
On Sept. 1, 1967, Hal married Jeanyse Reith. He returned to Astoria to practice law with the firm of Macdonald, Dean & McCallister, joined by Jeanyse after she graduated from law school. The law firm was eventually known as Snow & Snow, and Hal and Jeanyse practiced law together until September 2016, when ill health caused Hal to retire.
Hal was particularly pleased to assist seniors in their estate planning. His practice also included business and municipal law. He represented the city of Astoria for many years, and represented the city of Warrenton for 40 years.
Hal was active in the civic life of Astoria and the state of Oregon. He was instrumental in the formation of the Lower Columbia Youth Soccer Association. After a disagreement with the Astoria School Board about use of the school district’s fields for recreational soccer, Hal spearheaded the construction of what is now the soccer complex in Warrenton, which fields are among the finest in the state.
Hal was on the founding boards of the Friends of the Astoria Column, Friends of the Liberty Theater, and Astoria High School Scholarships Inc., and he served on these boards for many years. His service on the Oregon Community Foundation Board of Directors was particularly rewarding, as the foundation disburses charitable funds throughout the state of Oregon. More recently, he was a member of the Governor’s North Coast Regional Solutions team.
Hal is survived by his wife; and sons Jeremy A. (Sophie) of Portland and Randall W. (Shannon) of Salem; and five grandchildren, Ryker, Kincaid, Harvey, Adelaide and Estelle.
A private family interment has been held. At Hal’s specific request, there will be no public funeral or memorial service.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Friends of The Liberty, Friends of Astoria Column, AHS Scholarships Inc., the Oregon Community Foundation, or the charity of one’ s choice.
