Gertrude "Gertie" Maria Rinell

Gertie was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Astoria, Oregon, to Richard Simonson and Jennie K. Tohila Simonson. She was raised in Astoria, and graduated from Astoria High School in 1942.

Gertie married David M. Wullger in 1944, and divorced in 1963. She later married Ervin T. Rinell on Dec. 26, 1965, in Astoria, and he preceded her in death March 9, 2000.

She worked as a teacher’s aide with the Astoria School District for 20 years, retiring in 1986. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and was a past skipper of the Astoria Anchor Club. Grandma Gertie loved all the children at the school.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Laine of Astoria; and a son and daughter-in-law, David “Butch” and Roma Wullger of Vancouver, Washington. Grandchildren include Scott and wife Becky Wullger of Astoria, Andy Wullger of Astoria, Tiffany and her husband, Alex George, of Astoria and Trevor Laine of Beaverton, Oregon. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of one’s choice.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 24, 2017, at 1 p.m., at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary, 1165 Franklin Ave., Astoria, Oregon. A reception will follow the funeral services at Peace Lutheran Church.

A private graveside will be held later at Ocean View Cemetery in Warrenton, Oregon.
