Roy Terrance Wheatley Sr. was the oldest of seven children born to Lee Roy Wheatley and Sarah Harshberger in Caldwell, Idaho, on Feb. 18, 1929.
He attended school in Warrenton, Oregon. After completing school, he joined the U.S. Army during World War II and was sent to Tokyo, Japan, and served as a security guard transporting Gen. Hideki Tojo in the war crimes trials.
After his military tour, he returned to Warrenton, married and started his family. He worked in Clatsop County at Crown Zellerbach as a logger and mechanic for many years, but also worked building roads, as a commercial fisherman and crabber, saw miller, ran the Shell gas station in Warrenton and served as the first emergency medical technician in Clatsop County.
Roy was involved in many volunteer activities. He was a Boy Scout leader and facilitated the construction of the Spruce Run Campground. He was an active member of Habitat for Humanity, Warrenton Senior Meals on Wheels board member, Relay for Life and several church affiliations.
He was always busy gathering and transporting food donations and discretely helpful to people in need.
His love of hunting and fishing at Halfway, Oregon, started in 1967 in Hells Canyon, sleeping in a tent or a car. He returned almost every year after that.
But what he loved doing most was the 20 years he served on the Warrenton Fire Department and in the latter years as assistant fire chief.
He is survived by his bride, Bobbi Kron-Wheatley, and his children, Joy Mazeikas, Jan Osterby (Larry), Roy T. Wheatley Jr. and Jody Wickett; stepchildren Sherri, Jerry, Debbie, Darcell, Lisa, Cathy, Phil, David, Randy, Mark and Patti; grandchildren Tara, Alissa, Tracy, Michael, Joshua, Lucas, Amanda, Lana and great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at Caldwell’s Luce-Layton Mortuary at 11 a.m. Saturday July 8, 2017. Followed by a Warrenton Police and Fire Department escort to Ocean View Cemetery for graveside services.
